“Despite our state’s relatively poor job performance, California voters are being asked to accelerate minimum wage increases this November. As they consider this year’s minimum wage ballot measure, Californians may wish to think about the high cost of hiring new workers, which includes much more than the hourly wage… One factor retarding California’s employment growth is its minimum wage rules.”
Should you still tip 20% for bad restaurant service? The debate is changing
“As we saw with how quickly California legislators backtracked on service fees when confronted by lobbyists, restaurants are part of an industry — and industries don’t change without pressure. Sometimes a server is not some sort of beleaguered anonymous worker who needs your sympathies. Sometimes a restaurant owner is not a down-on-their-luck proprietor who deserves your unconditional support. Sometimes they are just bad at their job. It’s OK to treat them as such.”

Restaurant Law Center files lawsuit against Denver alleging it violated federal energy efficiency law
“Denver’s Energize Denver electrification program hit another snag when a group led by the Restaurant Law Center filed a lawsuit against the city alleging the regulations violate a federal law that prohibits the city from regulating the energy efficiency of consumer and commercial products... Amador said the trend he sees in such local regulations has been backing away from enacting them in California as the result of a 2019 9th Circuit Court of Appeals case, California Restaurant Association v. City of Berkeley.”
Restaurant industry outlook remains uncertain as challenges mount
“But it may be shortsighted to solely blame restaurant category weakness on the overall economy and behavior changes among lower-income consumers. While both are contributors, restaurant outlets operate on slim margins, and other economic shifts related to higher labor costs, reduced traffic at some outlets due to more people working from home and the adoption of a four-day work week by some businesses also may be contributing to this period of contraction.”
