California's Fast Food Council wonders what the heck it's doing
“One after another [employers] recounted how they started with nothing—most identified themselves as either first- or second-generation immigrants—and ended up with an unexpectedly good life thanks to the fast-food business. For just about all, the kicker was an assertion they are now closing restaurants, cutting hours and eliminating jobs because of the $20-an-hour minimum wage that was forced on them April 1. Closings would only accelerate if the Council approved a hike for 2025, they warned.” “…Despite the amity, little was achieved during Wednesday’s meeting. The two solid outcomes were an agreement that a director needed to be hired quickly to avoid tail-chasing in future meetings, and the creation of a subcommittee to define the position’s functions and responsibilities.”
California regulators approve another PG&E rate hike
“The California Public Utilities Commission on Thursday approved another PG&E rate increase, which would bring bills up about $6 a month on average. The decision marks the fourth time PG&E was granted a rate increase this year.”
“PG&E said it needs to bump up bills in order to make back what it lost during last winter’s major storms.”
Kamala Harris Proposes to End Tip Credit in New Policy Push
The move raises concerns over wage increases, job losses, and reduced earnings for tipped workers.
“Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign released a 23-point policy platform on its website this week, and one phrase in particular is catching the restaurant world’s attention: a promise to “fight to end sub-minimum wages for tipped workers.” The policy could trigger sweeping changes across the industry if enacted, reshaping how servers are compensated and how operators run their businesses.”
Positive Ratings of Restaurant Industry Tied for Lowest
“The nine-point decline in positive ratings of the restaurant industry, to 52%, has been accompanied by a four-point increase in negative ratings and a five-point increase in neutral ratings. The only other time restaurant ratings were this low was in 2008, when 51% rated the industry positively.” “Historically, restaurants have averaged a 61% positive and 10% negative rating.”
